The Association of Lesbian and Gay Faculty and Staff
was
established in approximately 1989 as a way for CMU employees
to socialize with each other and to take steps toward
combating homophobia at CMU.
Among the early political activities of the ALGFS were a
strong involvement in the (unsuccessful) attempt to remove
the ROTC program from campus and the (successful) attempt to
have the university's Board of Trustees include "sexual
orientation" as a protected category in its own
non-discrimination statement. On the social side,
there were monthly potluck dinners held at member's homes
and a reading group was formed.
Although the Association has become less active in recent
years in terms of social activities, members of the ALGFS have been instrumental in fighting for
the rights of CMU's GLBT faculty, staff, and students.
Most notably, the ALGFS advocated to establish an inclusive
non-discrimination policy, an Office of Gay and Lesbian
Programs, GLBT resources at the library and a bibliography,
and domestic partner benefits.
